Be True To Your School

The design I used represents our school by our school colors and it's abbreviation.  BHS stands for Blackville High School.  The easiest part was choosing the bus and the design, the hardest part was painting the colors on the bus.  Digital art and Design are pretty interesting, however It wouldn't be my ideal job because i'm not really that good at it.  I think it would be fun to have a job in auto detailing, however it could be quite frustrating.

Before the War

Out of the two choices to pick from I chose this one because it seemed the easiest and less time consuming to do.  The easiest part was choosing the photo and filling in the cracks, however the more difficult part was matching sides up and sort of evening the pic out to look natural.  There was one time I have retouched a photo before of myself, I done this because I wanted to try out my new photo editor app.  I think it would be a pretty interesting and easy job to restore and retouch old photos, however I don't think it would be my ideal job choice because I wouldn't want to deal with fussy people.

Freak of nature

The animals I selected were a deer and a cat.  I selected these animals because they were similar in color so it wouldn't look too unnatural.  The most challenging part was matching them up to make it look real and the easiest part was choosing which animals to use. I think my creation looks pretty realistic, not too bad for my first try.  The colors match fairly well, there is a difference but doesn't look too different. I have never used an editing software before, this was my first time ever using one.

Automobile Design

  • To design a car it usually takes about 3 years, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. The phase they usually start off with is the sketching phase.  The sketching phase is just them drawing a bunch of different pictures of the car.
  •  Design is called problem solving because the people have fine arts degrees, but what they are doing isn't fine arts. They have criteria that they need to meet and draw their design based on it. It is essentially solving a problem.
  •  The feasibility stage is when the workers need to put the sketches on a "package" and match them up with something that maintains the theme. This is the biggest stage.
  •  I think that designing an automobile would interest me more than the other jobs in the automotive industry, such as automotive technicians, but I don't really think it would be my first job choice considering I don't really care how my car is made as long as it runs and it works good.  Designing an automobile might be fun but like I said it doesn't interest me that much to be considered a "dream job" or anything.

Automobile Body Styles

Coupe:

Coupes are often the sporty variants of saloon cars, with 2 doors. The coupe body style varies from car maker to car maker, and now there are even four-door coupes like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. The name ‘coupe' comes from the French verb ‘couper', which means ‘to cut'. An example of a two-door coupe is the Audi A5.  The Audi A5 is a compact executive car produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since 2007.

Convertible:

A convertible, or cabriolet, is a body style with a fold-able or retractable roof.  These cars often have canvas or vinyl roofs, though nowadays these are also made of plastic, aluminium or steel. Convertibles are usually two-door cars. An example of such a car is the BMW Z4. the BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel drive sports car by the German car maker BMW.  First generation production started in 2002 at BMW USA's Greer, South Carolina plant, with production of both roadster and coupe forms.

SUV:

An SUV, or Sports Utility Vehicle, is similar to an estate, but usually bigger and higher off the ground. SUVs are often four-wheel-drive and are designed for both on- and off-road use. Some have the towing capacity of a pickup, and offer the passenger carrying capacity of a minivan or large sedan. An example of an SUV is the Ford Endeavour.

Crossover:

A crossover is a vehicle built on a car platform but often with features of an SUV like increased ground clearance and a higher seating position. Crossovers are typically designed only for light off-roading. An example of a crossover is the Fiat Avventura.

Pickup:

A pickup is a light motor vehicle with an open rear cargo area known as a ‘bed'. These are extremely popular in the US, and feature factory-built integrated beds. The term also applies to coupe utility vehicles, where they are based on a car chassis or a dedicated platform. Pickups are sometimes called ‘Utes'.  They are often available with two or four doors for the passenger compartment.  An example of a pickup is the Tata Xenon, which features a double-cab design.

Jobs in the Automotive industry

According to the "ten best jobs in the automotive industry" article the jobs I would enjoy most would be either the F1 Safety car driver or the race car driver.  I would enjoy these the most because there's not much work involved, maybe a little bit of fitness every week but nothing real extreme.  It wouldn't be hard jobs at all, it's just driving cars.  In my opinion I wouldn't be smart enough to do engine repairs or anything like that so if I were to get a job in the automotive industry it would have to be something simple like test driving or being a race car driver.  Race car drivers would have some stress like trying to win and things but it wouldn't be too difficult driving a car.  My least favorite job would be a skunk works engineer.  a skunk works engineer would be my least favorite because In all honesty I don't have the skills to make cars.

Certification in the Automotive Industry

  • The NATEF is an organization that was founded to improve the quality of automotive technician training programs nationwide at schools. NATEF's primary focus is to examine the structure, resources, and quality of training programs and evaluates them against the standards established by the industry.

  •  SGS is an organization that was founded to help every person in the automotive industry improve performance and reduce risk. The primary focus of SGS is on the design, construction, and operation of motor vehicle inspection solutions all over the world.

  •  The ASE is an organization that was founded to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. Their primary focus is to promote excellence in automotive repair and service.

Careers in the automotive industry

Questions for the article:

1.   High-tech systems unheard of 30 years ago are now standard equipment on much of the nation’s fleet of vehicles: stability and traction control systems, adaptive cruise control and variable valve timing, just to name a few.
2.  Young people should have skills in math, science, communications and technical skills for a career as an automotive technician.
3.  Some advantages in obtaining an education as an automotive technicians versus other high-tech educational options are; automotive technicians can begin their career after just two years of education, which allows students to get out in the real world sooner- and with less college debt.
4.  Statistics forecasts automotive repair and maintenance industry is expected to add 237, 500 new jobs and have a 30 percent growth rate through 2020.
5.  The automotive technician career is fairly immune to the outsourcing of jobs picking up steam- first manufacturing jobs, now computer programming, customer call-center work, and accounting services all going overseas.
6.  Four positions that an automotive technician can hold in the industry are; with schools and colleges as an instructor, work in the technical services, high performance rebuilding and machining, and work in parts distribution and wholesaling.
7.  The automotive technician role is sometimes called the "portal career" because so many people have started their career in the automotive aftermarket as an automotive technician.

Video:

1.  Some aspects of being in the automotive industry I think I would enjoy would be working out problems for them or doing measurements because I'm good at doing math.
2.  Some things I found interesting about the video are there are so many things that you are expected to know and be able to do as an automotive technician suck as, plumbing services, electrical stuff, etc.  Another thing that I found interesting was the communication skills because you would often be talking to people in the public.
3.  Life long learning is an important aspect of being an automotive technician because the technology and electronics are always changing.  Everybody has seen it, each year with a new car, there are tons of new technology involved with it, and the technician needs to learn about all the new things quickly in order to make the changes.
4.  Some skills or characteristics that an automotive technician should have are, communication skills, math and science skills, and the motivation to learn.

Tech for the Sake of Tech?

  • I found it kind of surprising that most younger people don't care about having smartphone connectivity options in their automobiles. It seems that people between the ages of 21-38 haven't adapted the desire for technology as much as my generation. I kind of thought that they would care about these connections because, technology runs most peoples lives now a days. I strongly don't think my generation will feel the same way about this, my generations lives revolve around technology, mainly smart phones. I think my generation would find it very beneficial because, it just makes access to smart phones 24/7 an even easier goal to accomplish.
  • I don't think that the technologies mentioned in the article are beneficial to fixing the issue because drivers are obsessed with their phones. No matter how much technology is put into place, the driver still has the urge to check the text or isn't focusing on the road but, is focusing on thoughts of what it could say. People of today are glued to their phones 24/7 whether they're driving or not no matter the risks.
  • In my opinion and for most other people, the new technologies the vehicles have are always an important aspect to consider while purchasing a new vehicle. Most people always want the newest technology or at least a good enough version that help can be offered to the driver/passengers through its technology.
  • If I was purchasing an automobile, a really important technology I'd be interested in having in my vehicle would be the camera used for backing up and heated seats. I find I'm an accident prone person and kind of clumsy so I would probably run right into a hydro pole and not even notice. The camera shows u where you.ll end up and what is behind you so I think it would be a huge help and I'd definitely need it. Also I find heated seats great comfort especially for someone who is always cold like me.
  •  A new feature that I think most people would have found useless when it was first introduced is cruise control. I think people thought it was dumb because they could press the gas themselves and stay around the same speed so they didn't feel the need for it. But, in later years, people realized how important and beneficial cruise control could be to them.

Technologies in Developement

  •    Out of the six emerging technologies discussed in the article the one I think is less likely to happen is the Flying Cars idea.  They may be able to make them but more than likely the price of them will be very high which means only wealthy people would be able to buy them.  Not only would the flying cars themselves be pricey but it would also cost quite a bit to fuel them.  A flying car would need a lot of fuel and from experience two people I know own a mini helicopter and it costs them around $750.00 just for fuel to go for a 1 hour drive.  If they don't make many sales off them then chances are they won't make that much of a profit and will just stop making them.
  • Out of the six emerging technologies discussed I think the electric battery charging car will have the biggest impact on society.  With electric cars that means instead of having just gas stations you now will have Car-charging stations.  They are working on lowering the price for Li-on batteries.  One possibility for cost reduction is the further development of lithium-polymer batteries, which could potentially be lighter, more adaptable, more rugged and cheaper to produce.  Battery operated cars are going to have a big impact because you will no longer need gas which means you'll no longer need fossil fuels and it will be easier to just charge your car overnight and head out the next day.  Also with the cost of battery power possibly lowering battery powered cars could possibly be cheaper especially without having to pay for gas all the time.
  • Out of the 6 emerging technologies discussed, I think that the almost reality one is the Autonomous Cars. There are already a lot of technologies that are similar to this technology such as cruise control and Ford's self parking cars. I think science is getting quite close to mastering a car that can drive itself so, I believe that in the near future an Autonomous Car might hit the general population.
  • I think this new technology that Ford is working is pretty great. "The Drivers Workload Estimator" is going to be very useful to drivers someday. With this technology it can take some pressure off of drivers and help them to be less stressed by delaying calls. In situations where drivers are under a lot of pressure, the added stress that phone calls and text messages bring could cause accidents very quickly. With this new technology, drivers and their passengers can stay much more safe by not having extra pressures. This helps the driver be able to return back to a normal thought process and be able to avoid potential accidents that could be caused by added pressures in very testing driving situations like big cities or icy road driving.

  • My thoughts on the flying automobile are it seems like a great idea and it looks like a lot of fun.  However my only concerns are if something were to go wrong, even a tiny little thing then your life is at stake.  It would need to be checked by an engineer quite frequently.  Also it would be very expensive, something most likely only wealthy people could afford which means not as many people will buy them as the company may expect.  It probably costs a lot to make the cars and if they make more than people buy than chances are they aren't going to make as much money as they will hope off them.  The flying automobile may cause a lot of accidents resulting in deaths due to being high off the ground or someone making a mistake and bumping into someone else.  The cost will not only be pricey for the product itself but to gas it will be pretty pricey as well.

  • I think that a self driving car would also be an awesome thing to experience but, I think after awhile it would get kind of boring. They would take away the fun from driving experience. Personally I cannot wait to legally drive, I want a fun driving experience so I wouldn't want to have to switch over to a self driving car.  I enjoy driving, i find it amusing so a self-driving car isn't for me.  Driving something some people have a huge passion for and shouldn't be taken away from them. Although they might cut down on accidents, I just think we should take that as it is and move on without the self driving car. Not all change is good and i don't think a self driving car would be good for the populations mental health.

Automobile Timeline

1908- Henry Ford begins making the Model T.  What I found interesting was they made 10 660 cars in their first- year production.  It's interesting because that's a lot of cars made in their first year.

1911- Electric Starter Introduced.  This is interesting and very important because without Charles Kettering's invention of the electric starter we would probably still be starting our cars by hand cranking or some other way.  Electric starters are simple and easy to use, they're also very quickly and comfortable.

1935- Flashing turn signals introduced.  This is important for safety because when you use signal lights you're letting others know ahead of time when you're about to turn off somewhere so they know to slow down.  Also it's interesting because if the Delaware company didn't invent them then we could possibly be all still using hand signals or signal lights wouldn't be as advanced.

1939-  First air conditioning system added to automobiles.  I find this interesting because without the first air conditioner, there wouldn't be much chance of us having air conditioners now.

My Video Selections

The Ford Edsel

  • Named after Henry Ford's only son
  • Edsel was ridiculed for and was called the "horse car" or commonly known as the "toilet seat".
  • Ford's cost for marketing and building the Edsel cost somewhere between $250 000 000- $350 000 000.
  • After 3 years the Edsel was declared one of the auto industry's biggest flop.
The invention of the automobile
  • The early automobiles originally used the steam engine as their main source of power, they were slow and uncomfortable for passengers.
  • Henry Ford was inspired by an early steam engine.
  • By the early 1900's a lot of companies had began to make automobiles but Henry Ford brought it toward the public eye.

Henry Ford and the Model T

1.  The assembly line was changed by suggestions of 3 of his employees to not just have an assembly line where the workers moved down the line but to have the line move while the workers stayed in one place instead.  That way people could major in one skill and do that all day.  The skill of holding a wrench and turning a bolt all day could be taught very easily to unskilled people.

2.  Workers tended to stay longer and be more committed to Henry Ford's company than other companies at that time because he wanted to be fair with the wages he gave.  He gave really liveable wages to his employees.

3.  The Model T cost a little over $1000.  It was manufactured for the common man.

4.  The Model T's price dropped to $800 and then dramatically dropped to a little over $365.  I think the price dropped because of all the Model T's that were made, which they needed to be sold and because of how the times were, many people couldn't afford the higher prices.

5.  As the Model T became the main mode of transportation, the automobile offered people the freedom to travel.  They could go wherever they wanted whenever they wanted to.  People could travel for fun and not have to rely on railroad lines.

Looking at the History of the Automobile

                                                                             Carl Benz

1. The automobile has been around for 120 years.
2. A patent is a government authority or licence conferring a right or title for a set period, especially the sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention.  3. When Carl Benz obtains a patent in January of 1886 for his invention he described the automobile as a "vehicle with gas engine".
4. In August of 1888 Carl's wife, Birtha and his two eldest sons test drive his automobile, without him knowing.  The first petrol station is born from this.
5. The "axial pivot steering system" helps with the problem of not being able to steer the front two wheels simultaneously.
6. When the two automobile companies are merged it is called "Mercedes Benz"
7. As a pioneer in technology what Benz experienced that many other pioneers will never experience is that he lived to see his dream come true, which was the breakthrough of the automobile.

Journal #8: Digital Law

What I found most surprising about this unit is all the ways you can remove unwanted pictures/ videos from the internet, I didn't think it was possible.  For some reason I always thought that once something was already posted it couldn't be removed again unless you remove it yourself or report it.  In this unit the only things I found difficult to locate were some of the answers to the Copyright Copy-wrong questions, other than that everything else was pretty simple.  In my opinion the Copyright manual is very helpful especially for students because it gives us information on everything we need to know about copyright.  The manual tells us when we can copy things and the rules to copying things.  The copyright manual is an excellent resource for students when they are unsure about copyright because, like I said, it has everything you need to know about copyright.  The website NeedHelpNow.com seems to be an excellent resource for young people looking for information or help on cyber bullying.  It's an excellent resource because it gives you information on all sorts of things and gives you options on what you can do. I think the biggest issue for young people when it comes to copying is the copying itself. Copying is so easy to do now with all the technology. Many students tend to get lazy and when the work is right in front of them they copy because it's so easy.  Many students would much rather just take a paper offline and take the risk, rather than spend time doing it themselves. Copying happens a lot now and it's a growing issue for young people.  I think the biggest issue for young people when it comes to cyber bullying is that many people don't report it or want to speak up. It happens so often now with all of our technology we have and many people don't even consider themselves bullying or being bullied.  Most people behind a screen don't even think things over before they say stuff, they become a whole new person.  Some people are not aware of the consequences and they think they're doing no harm.  A lot of people don't know where or how to report these cyber bullying issues. If the websites and places to report them got out there more, cyber bullying might be easier to catch and be stopped.

Assignment #2: Cyber bullying and Privacy.

1.  Two actions that can violate someone's privacy is Non-Consensual distribution of an intimate image and voyeurism.  Non- Consensual distribution of an intimate image is if someone has a sexual picture/video of you that was sent privately and that person knowingly posts it online or shares it with someone else knowing that you would not consent to that, the person could be charged. Voyeurism is secretly recording or observing a person who reasonable believes his/her actions are private and:

  • who is in a place where the person might be expected to change or remove clothing.
  • Who is all or partially naked or engaged in sexual activity at the time or,
  • Where the recording is done for sexual reasons.
2.  Two other laws in Canada are acts that make others feel unsafe and unwanted or illegal sexual content.  Some examples of acts that would make others feel unsafe are harassment, Blackmail, uttering threats, intimidation, and counselling to commit suicide.  Examples of unwanted illegal sexual content are online luring, making sexually explicit material available to a person under 18, sexual exploitation and invitation to sexual touching.

3.  Examples on how you can report a potential crime is police and  cybertip.ca.  Options other than reporting are speak to a safe adult, contact kids help phone or talk to a close friend.

4.  Removing pictures/videos is a good section on NeedHelpNow.ca.  This section tells us how to remove unwanted pictures/ videos of yourself. When reporting a photo from Facebook for example you include your age, say that you are the person in the photo/video,say that you did not post the pic/vid, did not agree to it being posted and want it removed, let them know if you sent the picture/video to someone else.  The section in Dealing with Peers tells us how to gain control.  Some helpful steps in regaining control are Do not respond, delete the bully on social networks, block the bully from contacting you, review and adjust your privacy settings, change your accounts, save the messages or tell someone.

5. Something I found interesting is how much cyber bullying goes on in peoples everyday lives.

6. A change I could make is by sending messages of hope and letting people know they can talk to me if they need to.

Assignment #1: Copyright and Copy-wrong

1.  Purposes "Fair Dealings" protect a person when using others' materials are The Copyright Act provides that it is not an infringement of copyright to deal with a work for the purposes of research, private study, criticism, review, news reporting, education, satire, and parody, provided the dealing is "fair".

2.  Under fair dealings up to 10% of a copyright-protected work (including a literary work, musical score, sound recording and and audiovisual work) can be copied.  Other things that can be copied under fair dealings are one chapter from a book, a single article from a periodical, an entire artistic work from a copyright-protected work containing other artistic works, an entire newspaper article or page, an entire single poem or musical score from a copyright-protected work containing other poems or musical scores, and an entire entry from an encyclopedia, annotated bibliography, dictionary, or similar reference work.

3. Copying multiple short excerpts from the same copyright- protected work with the intention of copying or communicating substantially the entire work is prohibited.  If copying something exceeds the limits it may be referred to a supervisor or other person designated by the educational institution for evaluation an evaluation of whether it is permitted under fair dealing will be made based on all relevant circumstances.

4. Yes a fee can be charged by a place when providing other's copyrighted work without permission. The article said that any fee charged by the educational institution for copying something from a copyright- protected work must be intended to cover only the costs of the institution, including overhead costs.

5.  Teachers can copy in order to display a work protected by copyright, also teachers can copy, translate, communicate electronically, show, or play any copyright protected work for a test or examination.

6.  Educational institutions may not make a large-print book for a student with a perceptual disability without permission from the copyright owner.

7.  Yes, you can play sound recordings and turn on televisions and radios in the classroom, subject to all of the following conditions:
• it must take place on the premises of an educational institution;
 • it must be for educational or training purposes;
 • it must not be for profit;
• it must take place before an audience consisting primarily of students of the educational institution, persons acting under its authority, or any person who is directly responsible for setting a curriculum for the educational institution; and
• it must not involve a “motive of gain".
This users’ right does not apply to recorded radio and television programs, but only to playing radio and television programs while they are being transmitted (over-the-air broadcast, cable, satellite, or over the Internet).

8. Yes students at school can perform a play that is copyrighted.   An example is the performance of a play in a drama class. The same five conditions as those cited for playing sound recordings, listening to the radio, or watching television listed in the answer to the previous question must be met before this users’ right applies.  Also The Copyright Act permits educational institutions to perform music, whether recorded or live, without payment or permission from the owner of the copyright

9.  No schools can't legally play music at their own dances and sporting events without getting permission from SOCAN.

10.  Questions to consider when determining whether music use requires permission would be:
• Did the music use occur during school hours?
• Will the student be graded on the activity involving the music use?
• Does the music use involve a demonstration by a student or teacher for other students, teachers, assessors, or parents?
• Is it reasonable to consider the music use to be for educational purposes? The phrase “educational purposes” is not defined in the Copyright Act but can be described as an activity that is planned and where the objective is for students to meet one or more subject or program outcomes.
 • Was the music used on school premises?
• If admission was controlled, was it free?
 • Was the music use for a non-profit purpose?

11.  The Copyright Act contains a users’ right permitting anyone, not just students and teachers, to use copyright-protected works to create new works.   The following conditions apply to the creation of non-commercial user-generated content:
1. It can only be used for non-commercial purposes.
2. The original source must be mentioned, if it is reasonable to do so.
3. The original work used to generate the content must have been acquired legally.
4. The resulting user-generated content does not have a “substantial adverse effect” on the market for the original work.

12.  The Copyright Act permits showing an audiovisual work such as a DVD or video as long as the work is not an infringing copy or the person responsible for the showing has no reasonable grounds to believe it is an infringing copy.

13.  No. Teachers or students cannot copy a dvd or show at home and then show it in the classroom.

14.  Owners of legal copies of computer programs may make a single reproduction of these programs in only two situations:
 1. An owner of a legitimate copy of a computer program may make one backup copy of that program. The person must be able to prove that the backup copy is erased as soon as he or she ceases to be the owner of the copy of the computer program from which the backup was made.
2. An owner of a legitimate copy of a computer program may also make a single copy of that program by adapting, modifying, or converting the computer program or translating it into another computer language.

15. Yes teachers and students can copy from the internet, the only rule is teachers and students are required to site the source of the internet materials they use.

16.  Any original work I create is copyright protected.  Knowing this, I feel safer about what I am creating, being aware that it is protected online, and made illegal to be copied.  Although, it does make me wonder how this is effective, because I do know it is quite simple to copy a persons work, without anyone really noticing if the persons work is not popular.  Therefore, I wonder how my work being protected is relevant, if there is nothing actually done in the situation that is copied.

Journal #7: Digital Access

What I found most surprising about this unit was that small communities are getting more of an advantage to high-speed internet than very big cities are getting.  The only thing I found that was difficult was finding three positives and negatives for situations that were given to us.  I found it difficult because some things were quite similar or I just couldn't think of anything but it wasn't overly challenging.  I think everyone should have reliable fast access to the internet because it gets frustrating if you don't and so businesses won't threaten to leave because of the challenges posed by sluggish internet.  I am sometimes concerned about my privacy when it comes to sharing information online especially if it's a website not known about, I always worry about being hacked or something, however, I worry most when putting billing information in to order something online because i'm scared of them taking all my money or something.  Ways I can prevent my privacy from being invaded online would be to make my accounts private and make sure they aren't scams, also not to sign up for random websites.  I rarely worry that what I post as a younger person will come back and cause me trouble because most things I post online aren't inappropriate or anything because I have family members and things that view my stuff online so I keep that in mind when posting. The biggest issue for young people when it comes to digital access and privacy is some of them don't think or care about what they post, also some don't make their accounts private and anybody at anytime can get their information.

Assignment #1: Fast Internet Speeds in Small Towns

Rural communities have fast internet because they have high-throughput fibre-optic cables deployed directly into homes and businesses, enabling the quickest-yet speeds of up to 1,000 megabits, or one gigabit, per second.  These communities are getting faster internet speeds than what is even being offered by Canadian Telecom companies like Bell, Rogers, or Shaw because they are installing their own high-speed fibre-optic cables, or are benefiting as local companies do it- setting up homes and businesses with the fastest the internet has to offer.  According to Hope Reidt the community of Harrison is fortunate because their owners are very forward- thinking, so they're way ahead of the curve in terms of wanting to provide the best technology available. The community of Olds decided to build their own fibre network because some businesses were threatening to leave town because of the challenges posed by its once sluggish internet.  The community paid for it by using government grants and loans connecting every home along the way and residents can sign up for gigabit home internet access for $120 a month (or lower speeds for less money).  In Stratford when the community installed its own fibre-optic network they blanketed neighbors with Wifi access points and the University of Waterloo opened a campus there, and Royal Bank opened a $400- million data center, however Stratford didn't hold any grudges, quite the opposite actually.  Bell installed fibre optics to more than a million premises in Atlantic Canada, and also to Northern Ontario.  Small towns and communities need high speed internet more than ever to keep employers and residents from fleeing to hooked-up cities.  The Federal government has supplied $305 million subsidy to ensure nearly every household in the country has at least minimal, five megabit-per-second broadband.

Journal #6: Digital Business

One thing I found surprising about this unit was how popular Paypal is and how easy it is to use it.  I didn't think many people used it but now I know they do and I think it's great.  The only thing I found confusing about this unit was where you could use Paypal but I guess it can be used anywhere's unlike Google Wallet that can only be used in the US.  I always purchase things online, most of the stuff I've purchased was good quality and came quickly but other things took months to get to me and there was only one time I didn't like what I purchased, it was a bathing suit and the material was really bad and cheap looking and the size was way off so I was disappointed but that was the only time.  I've never sold anything online but my older brother has sold stuff on Kijiji and his experiences weren't that bad people gave him the money he was asking for and they would decide when and where to meet up, pay him and then leave and he's never had anyone call and complain to him so it was a pretty positive experience.  One tip I think is important is " When buying using Kijiji and other online service make sure buying is done in a PUBLIC PLACE and never send money via mail or other ways to the seller" I think this is important because the seller might just take your money if you're not careful.  Another important tip was " banks often charge fees for debit usage that is over a set limit so if you use your debit card a lot you may want to ask about ways to get rid of this extra fee or ask for "Cash Back" at checkout to help pay for future things"  This is important because if you use your Debit card a lot you could be charged a lot of money.  I think the biggest issue for young people when it comes to buying or selling online is using unsafe websites.  A lot of teens may see something online and buy it but it could really be a scam.  It's the same with selling things online, if your're not careful someone not all there or someone crazy could be buying your stuff.

Assignment #2: Paypall

Paypal is a service that allows you to pay, send money, and accept payments without revealing your financial details.  Paypal keeps you safe when shopping at all stores because they don't share your financial details with sellers and with purchase protection, eligible purchases up to $20 000 are protected.  Paypal makes money by having hidden fees and Paypal protects you from undelivered items by reimbursing you for the full purchase price of the item plus original shipping.  If I started a business I would allow payment using Paypal because it seems pretty secure and safe, probably one of the safest out there so I would definitely use it.  Between Paypal and Google Wallet I would prefer Paypal because it guarantees safe payment and can be used anywhere whereas Google Wallet you can only send money to people in the US and use the money to pay at locations only in the US or wherever Debit MasterCard is accepted which is useless to me because I don't live in the US or have any family members that live in the US either so I would prefer Paypal.

Assignment #1: Shopping Carts

The two biggest reasons people still shop at stores are for the socialization, it's a great way to spend time with people and socialize.  The other reason is there's no shipping frustration, you don't have to wait a week or so for something, no shipping fee and you don't have to worry about it being delayed due to a snow storm or anything. Two biggest reasons people shop online are it's easier to compare offers and people shop online for products unavailable in the near area.  The buying experience I would prefer would be online shopping because you can find good deals and purchase good things not in our area.  I don't think online shopping will be the only method in 2050 because lots of people still shop at stores today, it's a common thing people do especially young people who enjoy going to the mall and I don't think that will change, however I think smaller malls will eventually just close down due to less and less customers and most people travel to bigger malls nowadays and I think all smaller malls will no longer exist in 2050.  I think that the business change Canada Post has made was a smart idea because if their business was crippling then it was time for a change plus a lot of people do digital shopping so if they focus their work on that and delivering the products their business shouldn't suffer as bad anymore.  One way online shopping could make their return policy easier is to make the shipping free to return it and guarantee your money back or replace it as quickly as possible.

Journal Entry #5: (Digital Wellness)

What I found most surprising when it comes to digital wellness is how looking away from the road for just one second can be dangerous and scary.  Also another surprising thing about this unit is how so many people let the internet control their life and lots of people are unhealthy due to using the internet.  What I found hard or confusing about this unit was making the pledges to stay off the internet or limit my time because I am always on my phone surfing the web, I check everything in the morning, during lunch time and during evening when I get home, I never stay off my phone. When it comes to digital wellness I think the biggest issue for young people is they are constantly on their phones checking everything instead of doing physical activity and most of the time the internet can effect everyone not only physically but also mentally and I think it's becoming a problem.  Also another problem is some people get so attached to their phones that they block out even their family members which is also pretty unhealthy.

Assignment #2: The Pledge

I pledge to use less technology
I pledge to not use technology before bed
I pledge to limit my time on the internet to 2 hours maximum
I pledge to put my homework before the internet
I pledge to spend more time with my friends and family and doing physical things instead of sitting home on my phone watching Netflix

Assignment #1: One Mississippi

Seeing these distances in meter sticks made me feel nervous to look away because it's proven to be very dangerous.  Anything could happen when you look away just for a few seconds.  One reason this may be effective is because it makes you more nervous about looking away and may make you a more careful driver.  One reason it may not change anything is sometimes people get so distracted and look away without thinking or maybe something catches their eye and they look away.  Some people probably don't even care and will still do it anyways because they don't think anything would happen to them.  Something that could help people from being distracted would be to have something like Siri in your car where you could just push a button on your steering wheel and say what you want like "turn on music" or call/text someone or anything really.  Next time I am in a car with a distracted driver I will most definitely speak up, because it is important not to put you or other cars in harms way.

Journal #4: Netiquette

The things I found most surprising when it comes to issues around Netiquette are that sometimes we agree to things we don't even know about because we don't take the time to read the "terms of agreement".  Another thing I found really surprising was that iTunes can take what you bought off your device, even though you thought it was yours forever and you paid for it iTunes can still take it away from you.  I don't think most internet users read or concern themselves with the terms of service/use agreements when joining a site or online or online service because many people i've talked to said they just skip through it all, including myself because I find it a waste of time.  People should read the terms of service/ use agreements because you could be agreeing to anything and not know about it.  On a scale of one to ten I would rate my online behavior about a 7 because I don't usually say anything negative or get into spats online but when discussion an opinion sometimes I don't look at the other persons view of things and just look at things my way.  One thing I can take from this unit and put into practice to improve my online behavior would be to respect other peoples opinions.  I think the biggest issue when it comes to Netiquette among young people is sometimes they don't think before they say things and often get involved in big arguments online or they say hateful things to people without thinking.

Online Discussion Boards: Assignment #3

  1. Many of the guidelines are similar to how we expect people to act face to face because it's like the same things.  When talking on the internet we are expected to be respectful and polite same as on the internet.

2.  Four guidelines that I feel are extremely helpful and necessary when interacting with others in an online discussion are:
  • "Don't type in ALL CAPS! if you do it it will look like you're screaming" This is important because nobody likes someone yelling at them and it doesn't look or seem very polite.
  • "Stay on topic don't post irrelevant links, comments, thoughts, or pictures" This is important because saying or posting irrelevant things are annoying and chances are you will be reported or asked to leave the discussion.
  • "Be forgiving.  If your classmate makes a mistake don't badger him or her for it.  Just let it go.  it happens to the best of us."  This is important because you don't want to come off as rude, everyone makes mistakes including yourself and you wouldn't like someone badgering you for a mistake so you shouldn't do it to others to make them feel bad.
  • "Don't badmouth people or call them stupid.  You may disagree with the ideas but don't mock the person"  This is important because it can hurt their feelings if it gets back to them.
3.  I've made comments on an online discussion board before, however it was a pretty positive experience because there was nothing negative being said or anything and all was good.

4.  I think I would enjoy a course where you could discuss issues online with other students because you can get both insights on an issue and you can benefit from other students opinions through the discussion to get a better understanding of things or look at things a different way.

Do as I say: Assignment #2

Five reasons/facts that will make me choose the right way of doing things in digital society are:

1.  I don't want to get in trouble with the police.

2.  If I want to be treated with respect I should do the same with others.

3. I don't want others to think I am miserable and unhappy.

4.  Others deserve credit for their work instead of claiming it as mine.

5. A lot of work goes into songs and movies and the people should get paid.

Online Standards of Service use: Assignment #1

Five companies that use the terms and service agreements or have major conditions before use are Facebook, ask.fm, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat.  Five services that teens should look further into are "You don't own what you bought", 'They can turn your device into an expensive brick", "OnStar is narcing you out", and "iTunes knows what you are and what you're doing", and "you're almost always giving up your right to sue".  "You don't own what you bought" means that when you buy a digital file you don't actually own it you're just buying a licence to it.  If you read the terms of agreement a lot of them will say they reserve the right to change, suspend, or fully remove any product or content that they choose and they don't mean remove it from their site so nobody else can buy it; they mean remove it from the device you downloaded the file to, never to be seen again.  "They can turn your device into an expensive brick" means with phones it's legal to "jailbreak" the device but just because it's legal doesn't make it a good idea.  Most companies have paragraphs in their terms of service that say you promise not to mess with the software.  if they find out you did, you have given them the right to cause trouble.  For instance, Nintendo, after realizing people were installing software to pirate games on the Wii, released an update that would bring the system upon installation. "OnStar is narcing you out", what that means is OnStar is that incredibly convenient product many drivers use, however what you didn't know is that they are legally spying on you also a new agreement for OnStar forces you to allow them to sell your data to whoever they want.  They sell stuff like your vehicle speed, location and things like that but the downfall is they could sell it to your insurance company.  "iTunes knows who you are and what you're doing", apple can use iTunes to watch you all the time.  Apple is able to see your precise location.  Basically, the location data your phone has been storing is sent to a hidden database file and sync it to your computer whenever you connect your phone.  This means that somewhere on your computer is a log of everywhere's you've been.  "You're almost always giving up your right to sue", almost every user agreement now includes a clause about arbitration.  This means that you agree not to sue should a dispute arise.  Instead your case will be taken in front of an arbitrator who will listen to both sides one of which will include a team of lawyers.  The other side will just include you. http://www.cracked.com/article_19683_6-terrifying-user-agreements-youve-probably-accepted_p2.html

Journal #3: Digital Rights and Responsibilities

The things I found most surprising when it comes to digital rights and responsibilities were all the commandments to follow and how a simple mistake online can effect your life in real life.  Also I found it surprising how these commandments seem to be known whereas some of them I never knew existed or was something you had to follow.  I don't think most people act responsibly when online because they are behind a screen and are not in the right state of mind to think of the consequences of their actions and they feel they are not doing anything wrong.  Most people I find seem to think they are "tough" when behind a screen and they don't act responsibly to situations they think they are free to say what they want without any consequences and that's where a lot of cyber bullying comes into play.  Out of all ten commandments I think the most important was "Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans".  I think this is most important because having respect online is very important so you don't run into trouble and everyone's happy.  Among young people I think the biggest issue around digital rights and responsibilities is cyber bullying.  Young people nowadays will say anything behind a screen because they don't think before they say anything, they're behind a screen therefore they think that their opinions and things won't matter and they don't think any consequences will be involved or they're really hurting someone.

Journal #2: Digital Communication.

The things I found most surprising when it came to digital communication was all the acronyms that are used, I didn't even know some of them.  Also another thing I found surprising was all the common passwords that people use and it goes to show just how easy it is to hack someones account.  Things I have learned from watching the video about email etiquette was you should answer an email within 24 hours and anytime after one week is considered rude.  Also I learned that you shouldn't use caps in emails because it makes it seem like you are yelling at the person and it's also important to put a subject for your email and start off by saying something related to the title instead of just starting off by saying "hi" because chances are your email will go to the trash quickly. BCC is a copy of an email message sent to a recipient whose email address does not appear (as a recipient) in the message.  It is best to use the BCC feature when sending an email message to a large number of people.  When you place email addresses in the BCC: field of a message, those addresses are visible to the recipients of the email.  Out of all the information I read I think the most important thing for young people to consider when using digital communication would be to remember to use proper language when talking to important people and to use email correctly and politely.

Acronyms attack (Assignment two)

Three more acronyms I can think of are:

1. OMW - on my way
2. HBU- how about you
3. NTM- not too much

Four places I would never use acronyms using digital communication would be on a resume, work file, typed assignment for school or important email to someone.

Communication Compass (Assignment one)

What is the definition of digital communication?

The definition of digital communication is the way and how people interact has been changed forever.  Social media, texting, and portable connected devices have made it more important than ever to examine the way we interact digitally.  Technology itself is never good or bad, it is the way it's used that creates those categories.

List 4 digital communication advantages and 4 disadvantages in your opinion:

advantages:
1. contact family members
2. make plans with friends to meet up
3. contact someone in case of emergency
4. call someone if you need help with something

disadvantages:
1. pervert tries to communicate with you
2. hackers
3. could call to meet up with a stranger and he kidnaps you
4. face time or snap chat pictures to someone who screenshots them and posts them somewhere's

What are the three most popular forms of digital communication today and why do you think they are popular?

The three most popular forms of digital communication today are social media, texting, and portable connected devices.  I think these are most popular because we use a lot apps today using social media to communicate with others and we also do a lot of texting to a lot of people throughout the day.  It is so easy to get someones number using social media then putting it into our portable connected devices and texting it that's also why I think these are the most important.

What three forms of digital communication may not be around much longer and why do you think they are going to disappear or become irrelevant?

I predict that blackberry messaging may not be around much longer same as Email and landlines for home.  Not many people use blackberry's anymore and i think it will eventually just fade away also using Email is slowly becoming less used due to being able to just send a simple text or message.  Furthermore, I think due to cell phones most people will disconnect their landlines for home because the majority of the people just use their cell phones to contact each other now and house phones nowadays are basically useless when you have a phone you can carry around with you wherever you go.

Can you list five locations or scenarios in real life where you really SHOULD NOT be communicating digitally and suggest WHY?

Five scenarios in real life where you really should not be communication digitally would be when making a big announcement like telling your partner you are pregnant, that should be done face to face.  Also proposing to someone that should also be done face to face.  Another one would be when fighting with someone you should handle things together privately instead of posting about it everywheres to get more people involved.  Another one would be when asking someone out or asking someone to prom you should do it face to face to make things more realistic and special.  Finally another one would be I think people should keep their life problems off social media and not post about their breakups because nobody really cares about your breakup, if you need help go get help from a professional or get counselling instead of getting random people off facebook or online. Also a bad location for using your cell phone would be at a funeral, hospital visiting a loved one or when speaking to someone, its best not to be digitally communicating at these times to show respect and to not come off as rude.

Spend some time online researching dangerous digital communication then answer: In your mind which TWO forms of digital communication represent the greatest DANGER to your personal health and safety and why?

Two dangerous situations in which you should never use digital communications include communicating (texting) in a vehicle while driving, and using social network sites in a harmful way such as cyber-bullying, or spreading viruses. These bring danger to your personal life both physically and emotionally. Both can be avoided with using the technology considerately at the right time and place.

Do you think human kids will continue to be more and more connected or will people eventually find their own healthy balance? Why?

believe over time, kids will eventually find a healthy balance for their lifestyle with technology. It may seem hard to see as of now, only because the online world is growing so fast, but I think kids will adapt to all the changes and be intelligent with how much they use it. It will only be so long before they see how addicted they are to technology before they smarten up and do something productive with their life.

When a person dies, is too sick or injured to communicate or for any other reason avoids all digital communication; what should happen to their accumulated online communications and records of internet activity? What is your solution to this growing problem?

When a person is no longer able to update or keep in touch with their personal online communication, I think there must be something on their will that lets them choose what they want to happen to their accounts. If I were going to die, and knew I had to make a choice about what I wanted to do with my online life I would keep it up to let others see my life as a person and what I accomplished. Others may want their account deleted completely due to the fact it could be hacked, or simply because there is no one alive to update that personal profile anymore. A solution to this growing problem would be to make every person with an online profile fill out a form regarding the situation.

Journal #1: Digital Security

When it comes to digital security and creating passwords the thing I found surprising was how easy it is for computers to guess passwords and how common some passwords really are.  I didn't really find anything confusing or difficult about this section, it was pretty straight forward, it showed us the common passwords, how to choose a strong password and using math to prove a passwords value.  Based on the information in this section I don't think my passwords are very strong but they also aren't the worst or most common passwords around.  I think the most important thing to remember when considering passwords is to make it long but memorable and use one that's unique and not very common.

Digital Security (Assignment 1)

In the worst password list I think some of the passwords would be really easy to guess, however there are a few that I would probably not even think to guess like qwerty for example and adobe123 I probably wouldn't think of either of those.  From the list I have used some of these passwords like "1234", "000000" and "111111"  I feel kind of stupid for using these passwords now because they are so common and easy to guess and anybody could access my accounts or information. My thoughts about the list are it's pretty accurate.  Yes I think seniors and adults are more likely to use these passwords because they want something simple, like my mother for example uses really simple passwords something like the ones in the list.  Things we can do to save them disastrous consequences would be to show them the list and convince them to make up new passwords.  Three more passwords I can think of that are not on the list are "696969", persons name, or "2468".  In order for a modern password to be considered strong is it should not be just one word it should be a full sentence.

Apps on Google

The two apps on google I chose were Pixlr Editor and Pixlr Express.  Pixlr Editor is the most popular advanced online photo editor, no download is required and It's free.  Pixlr Editor is used to edit photos and do touch ups.  Pixlr Editor contains a lot of the features that you normally see in desktop graphic design applications.  Pixl Editor provides tools like layers, lasso tool, brush controls, cloning, and filters.

Pixlr Express is a fun photo editor that lets you quickly crop, re size, and fine-tune any picture.  Pixlr Express lets you choose over 2 million combinations of free effects, overlays, and borders to personalize your images.  Pixlr Express also helps lets you create and customize a photo collage, it also offers an "auto fix".  More cool things Pixlr Express allows you to do is fix "red eye", whiten teeth, and choose borders.  These apps would be useful if you were a photographer and need to edit photos, also these apps would be useful if you wanted to touch up some of your photos or maybe edit a selfie.
